Submitting a manuscript
Thank you for your interest. We welcome submissions.
Manuscripts should be complete, in electronic form: in MS-Word, preferably .doc format, particularly where e-books are to be made. All graphics (photos, etc.) must be submitted separately, in .jpg files of 300 dpi. Please indicate where graphics are to be placed and number them accordingly, with appropriate captions.
Authors are expected to submit professional manuscripts which have been spell-checked. We will also edit language and style of manuscripts which have been accepted for publication. Avoid layout practices like many Spacebar and Enter arrangements. Rather format paragraphs according to Style design in Word.
Unsolicited manuscripts
Manuscripts which have not been invited, requested or commissioned will usually take a long time before being considered. If no response is received after three months, it usually indicates that the manuscript has been declined for some reason. Publishers are generally inundated with manuscripts which have not met specific criteria. In some countries no manuscripts are accepted which have not been received through an agent. Unsolicited (printed) manuscripts are not returned; this would be very laborious and costly.
Benefits of publishing with Rosslyn
Publishing a book is a time-consuming process, especially where a publisher cares about the quality of work and in the present time of enormous demands for publishing. We keep overheads low by doing editing, layout, design, etc. in-house. We can also provide literary advice and editing of books, including poetry.
Rosslyn Press offers benefits to authors:
(a) Authors' royalties comprise 50% or 15% of the nett retail price;
(b) Authors can buy copies of their own books at a discount of 30% on the retail price.
(c) They can resell such books and pocket the 30% mark-up.
Together these two benefits (a) en (c) represent a considerably higher income than offered by most publishers, where 15% is usually regarded as substantial.
Authors receiving 50% royalties pay up-front for preproduction, currently up to R60-00 per numbered printed page. For this once-off payment all is done to prepare the book for printing or for the Web (pdf). All manuscripts are now also converted to Kindle publications and prepared for Smashwords/D2D.
Authors are also asked to pay the printing costs of the first (usually) 20 copies of the book, for promotional, reviewing and legal deposit purposes.
